Chromium-based Edge will replace old Edge automatically

Microsoft has scheduled the release of its new Edge browser based on the Chromium engine on January 15, 2020. In early November, company representatives said that immediately after the release, the new Edge will gradually be integrated into Windows 10. This week, Microsoft spoke in more detail about how the integration of the new browser with Windows 10 will go.

In future, Edge releases based on Chromium will not be associated with the release of new versions of Windows. Users of Windows 10 (1709) and newer versions will receive the browser automatically through Windows Update.

“The next version of Microsoft Edge has more frequent and flexible updates. Since browser releases are not related to major versions of Windows, changes will be made to the operating system so that Microsoft Edge blends in seamlessly with Windows, ”Microsoft said.

After installing Edge and the corresponding updates for Windows 10, all browser menu items (pins, tiles and shortcuts) will be transferred from the old version of Edge to the new one. For corporate users who want to prevent automatic migration to avoid compatibility issues, Microsoft will provide the Blocker Toolkit. The tool can also be used in home versions of Windows 10, but only administrators can do this. Blocker Toolkit does not block the manual installation of a new Edge.
